Clean energy bill in Illinois is the right move for consumers and the climate
Illinois consumers and communities would gain a stronger voice in energy policy under legislation proposed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
That’s just one reason why we’re supporting the Consumers and Climate First Act. Released on April 29, the bill not only sets bold statewide clean energy goals, but also includes reforms called for by Illinois PIRG through our Take Our Power Back campaign.
The need for greater utility accountability became clearer than ever last summer, when federal prosecutors deemed actions by Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) to influence energy policy in Springfield a corrupt bribery scheme, and ComEd agreed to pay a $200 million fine.
“We applaud Gov. Pritzker for taking a stand against undue utility influence and putting the interests of consumers and the climate first as we move toward clean energy,” said Illinois PIRG Director Abe Scarr. “It’s long past time to end automatic rate hikes, prohibit utility bill surcharges and restore meaningful utility oversight.”
