Oregon citizens, senators rally online to address plastic pollution crisis

When it comes to addressing our plastic waste crisis, Oregonians are aiming high.

On March 15, Environment Oregon hosted a virtual Rise Above Plastic Pollution Day, alongside other environmental groups, U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, state Rep. Janeen Sollman, and dozens of Oregonians from across the state. The event highlighted Oregonians’ efforts to stem the tide of plastic pollution. From a research lab at Oregon State University to the halls of the U.S. Capitol, these efforts are taking aim at curbing the 33 billion pounds of plastic that enter our marine environment each year.

“Nobody wants their children ingesting dangerous chemicals and microscopic plastics. And plastic production is a major driver of pollution accelerating the climate crisis.” said Sen. Merkley. “Our kids’ health and futures depend on America solving this problem.”

Environment Oregon is also advocating for the passage of Sen. Merkley’s Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act bill, which would significantly curb our nation’s plastic use.
