Biden administration approves nation’s 10th offshore wind farm
An offshore wind farm approved off the Maryland coast marks the half-way point for reaching the president’s goal of 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030
The Biden administration approved an offshore wind project off the coast of Maryland on Thursday, marking the 10th commercial-scale offshore wind farm approved off America’s coasts.
The Maryland Offshore Wind Project would install up to 114 turbines off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula and produce enough electricity to power more than 770,000 homes according to the White House press release. If the 10 offshore wind projects approve by the Biden Administration all get built, the national will generate half of the capacity needed to achieve the president’s goal of 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030.
“Every offshore wind farm that gets built off our shores moves our nation closer to a greener and healthier future,” said Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of the Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy at Environment America Research & Policy Center. “If all ten approved wind farms get built, millions of American households will be powered by the winds blowing off our shores, with none of the pollution that harms our planet or makes our loved ones sick. Progress on these ten offshore wind farms projects will also instill confidence to do even more.”
29 states have offshore wind potential and America’s offshore wind resources are big enough to produce more electricity than the nation currently consumes. Check out Offshore Wind for America to learn more about America’s vast offshore wind potential.
