Solar power

California’s impressive growth in solar power is at risk. We’re calling on Gov. Gavin Newsom to keep this good thing going strong.

On Oct. 7, 188 members of the Save California Solar coalition, including CALPIRG, implored Gov. Newsom and California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) regulators to protect and strengthen a key incentive for rooftop solar. Called “net metering,” the program reimburses Californians for the extra electricity their solar panels provide to the grid.

“Gov. Newsom has a golden opportunity to keep rooftop solar within reach for California families and businesses,” said Laura Deehan, state director at Environment California Research & Policy Center.

By offering an extra incentive to go solar, the net metering program helps the state achieve our goal of 100% clean energy, reduces strain on the grid, and increases resilience in the face of power outages. We expect the CPUC to decide the program’s fate by the end of the year.
