Coalition urges REI: Commit to PFAS phase-out deadline
For a year, groups have called on REI to set a timeline to phase out these chemicals due to the harm they cause to public health and the environment in their production, use and disposal.
PIRG joins chorus of other advocacy groups calling on REI to phase out toxic PFAS chemicals from its products.
On Sept. 20, a coalition of groups including PIRG delivered a petition with 130,000 signatures calling on REI to commit to action on toxic PFAS “forever chemicals.”
The groups called on REI to set a timeline to phase out the use of these chemicals in its clothing and other products. PFAS are used to make a variety of products including raincoats, hiking boots, gloves and cookware. According to the EPA, PFAS exposure has been linked to cancer, thyroid disruption and reduced vaccine response.
“REI should publicly set a clear timeline to phase out the use of PFAS in its stores to protect customers and the environment from harmful ‘forever chemicals,'” said Emily Rogers, PIRG’s zero out toxics advocate.
PIRG supporters also have called on Columbia Sportswear to take similar action. An April 5 report, “Going Out of Fashion,” graded 30 top apparel brands and retailers on their commitments to phase out the use of PFAS chemicals.
