The clean waters of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge provide a crucial habitat to a range of plant and animal species.

One of Georgia’s most famous ecological havens could be put at serious risk in the next few months.

On Jan. 19, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division opened the first of two comment periods inviting public input on the proposed Twin Pines titanium mine on the edge of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Containing the famous Okefenokee Swamp, the refuge provides critical habitat to a range of bird, fish and plant species. The mine’s operations would threaten the swamp, surrounding watersheds, and the wildlife that call them home.

We have taken action to protect the Okefenokee in the past. Last year, our national network submitted thousands of comments opposing this project, and got a commitment from the Chemours Company, a major chemical company, that they would not participate in the operation.

We will continue to oppose this project and work to protect this invaluable wild place.
