New Jersey advances transition to clean zero-emission vehicles
New Jersey is hitting the accelerator on clean cars.
On Feb. 15, Gov. Phil Murphy directed the state Department of Environmental Protection to propose the adoption of the Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) program by the end of 2023. The program would lower vehicle emissions and spur the transition to electric vehicles by gradually increasing sales targets until every new light-duty vehicle sold in the state was zero-emission by 2035. Adopting ACC II would result in cleaner air and a healthier climate for New Jersey, where the transportation sector accounts for nearly 46% of all greenhouse gas emissions.
“Nearly 20 years ago, New Jersey made a bold move to clean up our air and climate by passing the Clean Cars law,” said Environment New Jersey State Director Doug O’Malley.
“It’s time for the Murphy administration to finish the job of advancing toward a cleaner, electric transportation future by proposing and adopting Advanced Clean Cars II this calendar year.”
