Offshore wind bill advances in California Legislature

Powering California homes with renewable energy could soon be a breeze as an offshore wind bill gains ground in the state Legislature 

Just days after federal and state leaders announced plans to advance offshore wind projects, the California State Assembly passed Assembly Bill 525 on May 27. The bill would require state agencies to set offshore wind production goals and create proposals for increasing wind energy by 2045. If passed, this legislation would help California reach its offshore wind potential, which, according to our research partner’s “Offshore Wind for America” report, could meet 157 percent of the state’s 2019 electricity use. 

“With the passage of AB 525, we are closer than ever to breaking ground on offshore wind projects that are critical to meeting our climate targets and achieving 100% renewable energy,” said Laura Deehan, state director of Environment California.

Environment California urges the California Senate to support AB 525 during its policy committee hearing this summer.
