I set out to make a difference in people’s lives
Danielle Melgar
Food & Agriculture Advocate
Since starting with The Public Interest Network in 2016, I’ve watched and helped my colleagues win commitments from cities, states and colleges across the country to get 100% of their electricity from renewable sources. We’ve helped pass bans on single-use plastic bags, polystyrene foam and other plastic waste in 12 states. I’ve celebrated as we won permanent funding for our parks. I’ve seen us move nearly the entire U.S. chicken industry away from antibiotics overuse, which will help slow the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs that kill tens of thousands of Americans each year. I’ve witnessed our advocates turn a niche issue — the right to repair our own stuff — into a national conversation that will help consumers and the environment at the same time.
I set out to make a difference in the lives of people. Along the way, I realized I need the work just as much. I need to know that I’m making the world better for my future kids.
